Birch Bark, from the plant Betula alba, is also commonly known as White Birch, canoe birch, and paper birch. The therapeutic parts include the young leaves and the bark. White Birch is a tree found growing to a height of 65 feet in the northern US, Canada, and northern Europe. It has white bark that can be peeled off in horizontal strips. American Indians used Birch Bark to relieve headaches and the pain of rheumatism. Poultices of Birch Bark were used to ease the pain of burns, wounds, and bruises. Birch Bark may help to support normal urinary tract function and create an unfriendly environment for unwanted foreign organisms in the urinary system.
