This filter contains KDF, a material that Dr. Clark does not like because it may leach a tiny amount of copper.  She does not like chlorine either.  Her recommendation is that you filter the water COLD with a Hot Backwash Whole House Filter, before it comes to your shower.  We recommend you use the cartridge in this filter for filtering water for your showers only.

Many customers who buy a water filter to treat their drinking water are now beginning to ask about shower filters. They wonder why they need to treat water they won't be drinking. The surprising answer is that far more contaminants are absorbed during showering then by drinking water.

• When showering, hot water opens the pores and chlorine and other contaminants are absorbed through the skin.

• The effectiveness of the nicotine patch is a good example of the effectiveness of transdermal delivery. Contaminants are absorbed through the skin the same way, only they bypass the digestive system and go directly into the blood stream.

• Another area of concern is the inhalation of fumes. In the shower stall, the hot water produces steam in a confined area making it easy to inhale chlorine and other waterborne gases, such as radon.

Americans spend millions of dollars annually on skinmoisturizers, emollients and other products to fight dry skin, and conditioners and other lotions to keep hair from becoming brittle. Shower filters, instead of working like cosmetics to cover up or topically treat skin problems, solve the problem at the source.

• With the removal of chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and other chemicals, dry skin and harsh effects on hair and scalp and the dryness is gone. KDF process media is a high-purity copper-zinc granules used to filter chlorine, heavy metals and microorganisms. This filter uses KDF-55 that is most effective in removing chlorine and water-soluble heavy metals.

What is the difference between KDF and Coconut Carbon Filter Media?
KDF effectively removes carbon from hot water. Coconut Carbon filters is less effective in removing contaminants from hot water. A whole house filter is more effective than KDF if the water to be filtered is cold.

Does Dr. Clark use the KDF media filters?
No, although those filters are extremely effective in removing contaminants, Dr. Clark does not use them since they are made out of copper-zinc granules. This is why we do not recommend this filter to be used for drinking water.

What does KDF remove?
KDF media reduces or removes chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide, lead, mercury, calcium carbonate, magnesium, chromium, bacteria, algae, and fungi. This filter uses KDF-55 that primary purpose is removing chlorine and water-soluble heavy metals.

Is it recyclable?
KDF media are 100 percent recyclable and contain no chemical additives.

Who uses KDF media?
Hospitals, restaurants, municipal water treatment facilities, and homes rely on KDF process media to reduce or remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals, and bacteria from their water. KDF medium is being used to complement or replace activated carbon filters, removing up to 95% of the chlorine in municipal water. KDF media pretreatment of granular activated carbon also extends the carbon’s life and limits bacteria growth in the bed.

How do KDF Process Media Work?
KDF media utilize an old process in a new way -- the oxidation and reduction of ions, known as redox. In short, the redox process works by exchanging electrons with contaminants. This give and take of electrons converts many harmful contaminants into harmless components, such as chlorine to chloride. Other contaminants, including heavy metals, bond to the KDF media, which greatly reduces or virtually eliminates these substances.

How does KDF control bacteria?
KDF process media control microorganisms in two ways. The first is a by-product of redox; the exchange of electrons sets up an electrolytic field in which most microorganisms can’t survive. Second, the process of forming hydroxyl radicals and peroxides from some of the water molecules interferes with the microorganisms’ ability to function.

How Does KDF Remove Chlorine from the Water?
Harmful chlorine is converted to harmless chloride. High-purity copper-zinc redox media consistently remove 99% of free chlorine by electrochemically reducing dissolved chlorine gas to water-soluble chloride ions.

2. It is designed to automatically backwash and wash out the impurities using HOT water. Hot water expands the millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms of the Activated Coconut Carbon, allowing for a more effective regeneration and therefore more effective filtration.

3. It is located at the main intake in the house where the water is COLD. Only cold water can effectively be filtered using Activated Carbon.

How Often Should I Change My Filter Cartridge?

Change the filter every 6 to 12 months depending on frequency of use and size of household. If the smell of chlorine becomes present when using the filter, change the cartridge content.
