Folic Acid is a form of Vitamin B9 and is part of the vitamin B complex. All of the B complex vitamins help to convert food, primarily carbohydrates, into fuel for the body in the form of glucose, which the body will use for energy production. Vitamin B9 also plays key roles in maintaining the nervous system and new cell formation.
Folate is also a form of Vitamin B9. While folate occurs naturally in foods, folic acid is a synthetic form of B9 found in supplements and fortified foods.
Folic acid is an important nutrient in terms of brain function and mental health throughout the lifecycle, but especially during phases of rapid growth such as pregnancy, infancy, and adolescence when the production of genetic material is heightened. Folic acid requirements increase during pregnancy to lower the developing fetus’s risk of neural tube defects.*
Vitamin B9 works with vitamin B12 in the production of red blood cells and to ensure that iron functions properly. Folic acid, B6, and B12 work together to control the body’s levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with arterial hardening and thickening.*
