Glutamine is an amino acid—the most abundant amino acid in the blood steam. It’s considered a conditionally essential amino acid because the body can make glutamine, but typically not in sufficient amounts during times of stress, which can be caused by trauma, illness, disease, or physical exertion. Every cell needs glutamine as both a source of energy and for proper cell division.*
Glutamine helps to regulate the cells of the digestive tract and strengthens the lining of the gut. It also plays a role in maintaining the health of the liver, pancreas, esophagus, and mouth—all important to the digestion process.*
Glutamine is helpful for dealing with diarrhea, as it diminishes the loss of electrolytes and water from the intestines. It may also lessen the severity of diarrhea by enhancing water and salt intake to the body and reduces penetration of bacteria in the intestines.*
Glutamine nourishes the intestinal cells that maintain and repair the lining of the gut. Research indicates that glutamine can enhance the barrier function of the gut against viral, bacteria, and food antigen invaders (Hall JC et al. Br J Surg 1996 Mar; 83 (3): 305-312).*
Glutamine enhances immune system function and may help to decrease healing time after tissue damage. When the body undergoes stress or intense physical exertion, the hormone cortisol is released into the bloodstream. High levels of cortisol lower glutamine stores in the muscles. Glutamine in the diet, when the body is under stress, may help to preserve muscle tissue.*
Note: Glutamine is different from Glutamic Acid.
