N-acetyl cysteine (or NAC) is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, a potent antioxidant compound made in the body. Glutathione’s strong antioxidant properties help prevent damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. Proper stores of glutathione support the immune system and help to neutralize toxins, including heavy metals.*
Trace minerals selenium and molybdenum provide extra support to glutathione’s many amazing properties.*
Taking NAC may be more beneficial than taking oral glutathione, as glutathione doesn’t fare well during digestion and isn’t well absorbed. Taking a glutathione precursor like NAC, however, allows for the production of intercellular glutathione, and NAC is readily absorbed during digestion.*
NAC has also been helpful in reducing symptoms of respiratory disorders, including coughing, wheezing and phlegm associated with cold and flu. NAC is particularly good at thinning thick phlegm. NAC binds to the sulfur in mucus and deteriorates the structure, making it easier to expel the mucus out the airways.*
