Harsh, synthetic chemicals can be irritating and drying to the skin. Our Pearl Plain Soap is just three simple ingredients—lard, water, and lye—that cleanse and hydrate the skin.
Don’t be fooled by exotic scents and bright colors in the personal care department of your favorite store. Read the labels. If your soap of choice is called a “beauty bar”, “cleansing bar”, or “body bar”, put it back on the shelf—it’s not real soap! Rather, it’s a synthetically formulated detergent for your skin.
Real soap combines oils (fats) with an alkali, such as lye, to form glycerin. Glycerin is a valuable component on its own, and many manufacturers remove it from the product and substitute synthetic ingredients. The resulting product cannot legally be called soap.
The use of lard and lye in soap making has been around for centuries. Lard is a gentle emollient and helps to keep moisture in the skin. And lye helps to break down dirt. Lye soaps can also be used to clean your laundry.
Our soaps are free from preservatives, artificial fragrances and colors. Synthetic fragrances and dyes, often petroleum based, can dry and irritate sensitive skin. You will not find sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in any of our personal care products. SLS is a common ingredient in soaps and shampoos as a foaming agent, but it can cause skin dryness.
