Pepsin is the powerful enzyme in gastric juice that breaks down dietary proteins such as those in meat, eggs, seeds, and dairy products. The body produces pepsin in response to eating protein, but insufficient amounts may prevent the proper dismantling of ingested protein. Supplemental pepsin encourages a more complete break down of dietary protein and frees amino acids so they can participate in a number of life sustaining functions within the body.
In the stomach pepsin participates in the partial degradation of proteins into smaller units called peptides, which are absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream or are broken down further by pancreatic enzymes.
Small amounts of pepsin pass from the stomach into the bloodstream, where it breaks down some of the larger, or still partially undigested, fragments of protein that may have been absorbed by the small intestine.*
Pepsin may enhance the body’s natural metabolism and may assist in the process of removing waste and toxins from the intestines.*
Pepsin is activated in an acidic environment, such as the stomach, but it will not digest the body’s own proteins in the stomach lining. Because pepsin and hydrochloric acid (HCL) work together to break down your food, healthcare professionals recommend taking pepsin at the same time you take your HCL supplements.*
What does 1:3000 mean?
This ratio is an expression of potency. A ratio of 1:3000 means 1 gram of pepsin is capable of digesting 3000 grams of albumin.
