IP6, also known as inositol hexaphosphoric acid or phytic acid, is a form of inositol, a nutrient found in all body tissues. IP6 is composed of a sugar molecule with six phosphate groups attached. Although it can be categorized as a simple sugar, IP6 works differently than glucose—same chemical composition, but different arrangement of atoms. And while it yields a sweet taste, inositol is only about half as sweet as regular table sugar (sucrose).

IP6 can be found naturally in high-fiber foods, such as beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and corn. The IP6 from food is bound to protein. In order for the body to absorb IP6, it must be freed from protein by phytase, an enzyme found in the intestinal tract. Phytase, however, can be damaging to IP6, making it partially inactive, and therefore less effective when obtained from food. IP6 in supplement form is not bound to protein and may be better absorbed.*

IP6 acts as an antioxidant, blocking the effects of activated oxygen molecules (free radicals) that can cause cell damage. IP6 can be used in chelation therapy, for removing heavy metals from the body. It is especially effective at removing excess iron, which is used as a growth factor in tumor cells. IP6 binds with iron in tumor cells and escorts it from the body. It does not, however, remove iron from red blood cells.*

IP6 has been implicated as having a positive effect on diabetes, heart disease, kidney stones, and general immunity.*
