Folic acid is an important nutrient in terms of brain function and mental health throughout the lifecycle, but especially during phases of rapid growth such as pregnancy, infancy, and adolescence when the production of genetic material is heightened. Folic acid requirements increase during pregnancy to lower the developing fetus’s risk of neural tube defects.*
Folic acid, however, must be converted into its active form to be used in the body. But this multi-step process can be disrupted if there are liver or intestinal dysfunctions, resulting in insufficient amount of 5-MTHF, the bioavailable form of folic acid, to meet the body’s needs. It’s estimated that a significant portion of the US population may have a genetic enzyme defect that hampers the conversion of folic acid to 5-MTHF.
Thorne Research has bypassed the conversion process to deliver a folic acid supplement with superior bioavailability to support healthy immune, heart and nerve function, and promote healthy development of a growing fetus.*
