Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) is a naturally occurring substance found in high concentrations in cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, and cabbage. Although eating more cruciferous vegetables would be ideal, the cooking process decreases the amount of I3C available for absorption in the body, thus supplementation can help reach nutritional needs. I3C has been linked to maintaining female reproductive health and liver detoxification.*
When I3C is ingested, the majority is absorbed in the small intestine as diindolylmethate (DIM). DIM is thought to be one of the main derivatives that contributes to I3C’s benefits. DIM binds selectively to estrogen receptors to yield an optimal estrogen ratio.*
I3C metabolism in the liver may increase the ratio of 2-hydroxy estrogen to 16-hydroxy estrogen. The less active 2-hydroxy estrogens are generally eliminated quicker from the body. This increased ratio is favorable to maintaining female health.*
I3C is also believed to participate in liver detoxification. I3C enhances critical enzyme systems that help the body rid itself of disease-causing toxins from food and the environment.*
