Molybdenum is a trace mineral that functions as a cofactor in the detoxification process in the liver. One enzyme in particular that relies on molybdenum is sulfite oxidase, which oxidizes sulfite to sulfate in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids.
Sulfites are found quite frequently in food preservatives and enhancers, and they also occur naturally in beer and wine. An increase in recorded sulfite sensitivities during the 1970s and 80s prompted restrictions of sulfite use, but only in foods known to be common sources of sulfites, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. But sulfites can still be found in processed meats, potatoes, fish and pharmaceuticals.
This is bad news for people with sulfite sensitivities if they’re not careful about what they consume. A sulfite sensitivity can show up in a number of ways, including wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, itching, swelling, nausea, headache and diarrhea.
Molybdenum can enhance sulfite metabolism to reduce symptoms in individuals with sulfite sensitivities.*
Molybdenum may also be helpful during the Candida die-off phase, as it helps the liver expel the toxins produced when Candida cells are killed.*
