What is GERD & Acid Reflux?

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and acid reflux are related conditions that affect the digestive system. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and discomfort in the chest or throat. When these symptoms become chronic or severe, the condition is classified as GERD. Common triggers include certain foods, lying down after eating, obesity, smoking, and stress. Proper diagnosis and treatment, which may include lifestyle changes, medications, or in some cases, surgery, are essential for managing these conditions effectively.
