Book Review: Cancer Outsmarted: 11 Integrative Hallmarks of Cancer to Minimize Risk and Optimize Health
I first heard of Dr. Jimenez many years ago after reading Dr. Clarkโs first book, and then researching the various clinics that applied her protocols. I discovered the Hope for Cancer Treatment Center, which now has multiple locations, and learned that they were improving upon Dr. Clarkโs practice by applying the most advanced research and technological discoveries in integrative medicine. In his most recent book,ย Cancer Outsmarted, co-authored with Subrata Chakravarty PhD., Dr. Jimenez brings a wealth of important information for people seeking to both heal from cancer and prevent it from ever taking hold in the first place. Cancer hallmarks can now be discovered far earlier than previously thought, and these hallmarks are tied to other diseases as well, providing practical markers that anyone can act upon to improve their overall wellness strategy.
The book follows the outline of the 11 hallmarks of cancer and places them within 4 areas:
- Systemic Dysregulations,ย
- Environmental and Biological Triggers,
- Habits and Lifestyle Behaviors, and
- Emotional and Spiritual Imbalances.
In each area, the book offers holistic explanations, asking questions that draw readers to consider the terrain theory of disease. Readers are prompted to ask questions that help re-examine their health markers, beliefs, and behaviors, such as to what extent any given symptom is reflective of a wider systemic problem. A variety of unique strategies are provided for identifying how holistic understanding of health and disease, such as proactive steps to nourish your microbiome using dietary changes, and the role of many different positive and negative influences on health, like antibiotics, sugar, and alcohol.
One of my favorite chapters focuses on EMFs. Instead of just telling people poor sleep is the problem, it offers practical ways to improve sleep, such as limiting wireless device usage and using shielded cables for Ethernet and TV connections. It also mentions the importance of grounding to the earth, which has been found in studies to reduce inflammation, improve heart rate variability, and calm brainwaves and stress responses. The chapter spends even more time on the benefits of nature, which in the form of forest bathing has been found to modulate the immune system and improve health in numerous other ways. If youโre looking for inspiration to get into the great outdoors, this chapter will inspire you!
The chapter on carcinogens was presented with the latest information about how those originating from biological pathogens are often overlooked. For example, the bacteria Campylobacter has been found to cause DNA damage and is positively associated with certain cancers of the liver and GI tract. Identifying these stressors to the immune system can go a long way in helping navigate oneโs health.
The book represents a unique expansion of the definition of integrative care to include not just the combination of natural medicine and mainstream medicine, but the areas beyond the physical. One of the final chapters was on one of the most underappreciated areas of healing, and that is the role of oneโs spiritual and emotional terrain. While not directly informed by the authorโs own spiritual experiences, which he discusses at greater length in his first book, it focuses on strategies for reducing spiritual disconnection and finding a sense of higher purpose in life. A lack of a spiritual life can contribute to chronic stress and prevent healing from emotional stress. The chapter offers helpful suggestions for improving our spiritual disconnectedness, such as prayer, that can make a tremendous impact on resolving biological dysfunction.
Overall, there was a fascinating amount of depth and breadth with so much practical information on cancer prevention, theoretical explanations for the benefits of simple steps to take, and so many important markers of cancer to consider. For example, the chapter on exercise explains how certain molecules called myokines, or โhope molecules,โ inhibit cancer growth and create antidepressant effects. the book is brimming with charts, practical guidance, and decades of clinical experience, condensed into easily digestible and thoughtfully organized sections. Each chapter has extensive academic references for further research and indicates just how much research and knowledge went into this book.ย
Rating 5/5: would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a concise guide for outmaneuvering cancer and knowing what early indicators lab work can reveal.
