What Is Zerumbet?

Zerumbet, commonly known as shampoo ginger or Zingiber zerumbet, is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. It’s easily recognized by its vibrant green foliage and unique, pinecone-shaped flower heads that ooze a fragrant, rich liquid when squeezed. Traditionally, indigenous peoples across Asia and the Pacific Islands have used this liquid as a cleansing agent for both hair and skin

How Does Zerumbet Work as a Shampoo?

Unlike synthetic hair cleansers, Zerumbet’s natural extract doesn’t contain harsh detergents or sulfates. The liquid from the flower head can be applied directly to the scalp and hair. Its gentle lather helps cleanse away oils and buildup without stripping your hair's natural moisture. People who use Zerumbet report hair that feels softer, healthier, and less prone to dryness or irritation.

Benefits of Using Zerumbet as a Shampoo Alternative

  • Completely Natural and Organic

Zerumbet’s cleansing gel requires no processing or chemical additives.

  • Moisturizing Properties

The plant’s extract is rich in natural emollients that help retain hair moisture.

  • Gentle on Sensitive Scalps

Free from common allergens and irritating ingredients found in commercial shampoos.

  • Eco-Friendly

Grown without the need for harsh chemicals, Zerumbet is fully biodegradable, making it a zero-waste choice.

  • Traditionally Trusted

Used for generations in Hawaiian, Filipino, and other Pacific cultures, it’s a time-tested solution with a history of effectiveness.

How to Use Zerumbet on Your Hair

  1. Harvest the Juice

If you have access to the zerumbet plant, simply squeeze the mature flower head to extract the milky liquid.

  1. Apply to Wet Hair

Work the juice through your scalp and hair, massaging gently to ensure even distribution.

  1. Rinse Thoroughly

Allow the natural cleanser to do its work for a couple of minutes, then rinse with warm water.

  1. Repeat as Needed

For best results, incorporate this ritual into your weekly hair care regimen.

If you don’t have zerumbet plants handy, natural health stores and specialty shops are starting to offer zerumbet-based shampoo bars and bottled rinses.

What Does Zerumbet Smell and Feel Like?

One of Zerumbet’s charms is its fresh, slightly spicy scent. Some describe it as a mix of ginger and citrus with green, herbal undertones. The gel itself feels smooth and moisturizing, transforming into a gentle, creamy lather as you massage it into your hair.

Zerumbet sounds good, however, I’m sure that if I can find this shampoo is going to come in a plastic bottle, I’m in war with plastics, trying to reduce to the maximum, the only way I would buy it would be in bar form, even my dish soap is a bar, and love it. All my soaps are packed in cardboard, so is my deodorant.
I really, really, really despite plastics.

@Scott We are unaware of this being put into a product, as it is simply pressed from the fruit as-is for use as a shampoo. You might be able to find it to order online, such as on Etsy or eBay

    Hello Dr. Clark Store,
Thank you for this article on Zerumbet.
I live in Eastern Ohio in the USA bear the Panhandle of W. Virginia border. Can you recommend any store that might carry this product in a bar or rinse?
    Please and thank you!
    Scott
