Top Natural Anti-Cancer Protocols Using Metabolic Therapies

by Anika K

As conventional therapies continue to improve, they mostly do so based on their ability to accept natural compounds as "Adjuct therapies," which is why it is difficult to find any study on a single natural anti-cancer protocol. In particular, studies have shown that metabolic therapies in combination with chemo improve chemo outcomes and reduce negative effects from chemo.  Below, we highlight five notable natural therapies and provide scholarly insights into their potential benefits and limitations.

5 Metabolic Therapies

  1. Gerson Therapy by Max Gerson

Developed by Max Gerson, Gerson Therapy emphasizes a holistic approach involving a plant-based diet, raw juices, coffee enemas, and natural supplements, particularly Lugol's Iodine and digestive enzymes. The therapy aims to detoxify the body, and boost the immune system (3). For more on this, Dr. Gerson's book is a good place to start.

  1. Keto-Diets

Promoted by the Warburg hypothesis, which suggests that cancer cells thrive on glucose, the ketogenic diet aims to starve cancer cells by reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing fats. Similar to Dr. Hulda Clark's dietary recommendations, restricting sugar and increasing healthy fats and vegetables, this metabolic therapy seeks to alter energy sources for cancer cells. Studies are ongoing, but findings are still mixed regarding its effectiveness as a cancer treatment. Preclinical human trials have given mixed results and the diet seems to need individualization to be most effective.

  1. Ann Wigmore's Protocol

Ann Wigmore's protocol focuses on consuming raw, living foods, like wheatgrass juice, enriched with enzymes and nutrients believed to combat disease (2). It includes wheatgrass juice and blended salads. While the diet may offer nutritional benefits, there currently exists insufficient evidence from human clinical trials to consider it a primary cancer treatment. It's essential to discuss any dietary changes with healthcare professionals.

  1. The Water Cure/Fasting

The Water Cure, based on the idea that dehydration contributes to many health issues, advocates for increased water intake and maintaining electrolyte balance while not eating solid food. Variations include juicing low sugar beverages, tea, or intermittent fasting. Promoted by Drs. Shelton, Esser, Gian-Cursio, Scott, Sidhwa,Burton, Gross, and others, this diet is considered an important metabolic therapy for many diseases. A chapter in a Springer textbook on Cancer and Diet remarks:

"experimental data indicate that fasting/CR or FMDs significantly deplete the levels of tumour growth essential nutrients and factors, including glucose, IGF1 and insulin. Apart from significant decrease in the ratio of ATP/ADP and NADH/NAD, there is upregulation of variety of proteins, which are involved in apoptosis, autophagy, detoxification, DNA repair, genomic stability and immunosurveillance, while several proteins and pathways implicated in cell proliferation and oxidative damage are downregulated." (Dietary Research and Cancer, 2021).

  1. Medical Cannabis

Cannabis has gained attention for its potential anticancer properties due to compounds like THC and CBD. Preclinical studies suggest cannabinoids may induce cancer cell death and inhibit tumor growth.

Dr. William Courtney, a Californian physician, recommends use of raw cannabis which allows patients to “megadose cannabinoid intake without psychoactive effect” (1).  His patients are advised to increase “use of cannabis from the 10-milligrfam psychoactive THC dose to the 600-1000 milligram dietary dose” (1). This amounts to 25 large  fan leaves per day, that Dr. Courtney says you can use in juice, salsa, pesto, salad, etc. Fresh flower buds, he recommends one bud/day for general health maintenance, or several per day for patients suffering from a disease.

“Pioneering research conducted by Dr. Sean McAllister at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, has established that CBD (and THC) are potent inhibitors of breast cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and tumor formation.” (1).

McAllister’s team found that CBD and CBG were the most antiproliferative cannabinoids.

5 Common Methods and Theories used in Alternative Cancer Treatment

  1. Kill the cancer cells with nutrients, such as laetrile or Vitamin B17.
  2. Kill the microbes inside the cancer cells with DMSO, MSM, honey, as Trojan Horses, and electromedicine or other tactics. (See associated articles for more details on these approaches.)
  3. Supercharge the immune system to create interleukin and interferon and other neuropeptides, which in turn kill the cancer cells.
  4. Kill the parasites and microbes in the organs, thereby supercharging the immune system.
  5. Supercharge the immune system with nutrients.

Excerpt from the site:

Theory: In many cases, the immune system can get rid of microbes, but in fact, some types of tapeworms, flukes, and fungus, etc. cannot be killed by the immune system for one reason or another (e.g. the microbes are not accessible by the immune system). By getting rid of the microbes in the organs, plus doing the normal cancer treatments, the balance (i.e. a strong immune system and a low number of cancer cells) is restored enough to keep cancer from coming back. The theory is that cancer regresses because the immune system has been restored and the number of cancer cells has been reduced. It is also claimed that cancer will not come back as long as the patient watches their diet.

Cancer Regression

The approach of some conventional oncology treatments is to severely damage both the cancer cells and the immune system with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. According to adherents of the above theory, these types of therapies make the imbalance even worse because these things damage the immune system and do a very poor job of targeting the cancer cells and do an even worse job of killing the microbes in the organs. These same treatments may also kill healthy cells as well as cause side effects such as organ and lymphatic system damage, etc. Regression of cancer (when cancer returns in a new location or begins to grow again in the original location) after these treatments are claimed to be caused by non-targeted therapies that affect the entire body and are unable to target and kill cancer cells while supporting the immune system’s normal function...

Microbial invasion as a theory of cancer incidence

Everyone has cancer cells in their body, so why does one person never get diagnosed with cancer and another person is diagnosed with cancer? Cancer is almost always caused by the same multi-step sequence of events.

Theory:

  1. Microbes and parasites invade organs and utilize the resources in their host for growth and reproduction.  These microbes reportedly come from meat that was not adequately cooked but can come from other sources.
  2. Microbes intercept glucose which was headed for the cells in the organs.
  3. These microbes excrete (as waste products) mycotoxins, which are highly acidic and toxic to the host cells.
  4. The cells (in the organs) don't get the food they need (because it has been intercepted), and because they are living in a sea of filth (i.e. mycotoxins), the cells in the organ become weak.
  5. Organs are made exclusively of cells. In other words, if you took all of the cells out of an organ, there would be no organ. Thus, because the cells in the organ(s) are weak, the organ(s) are weak.
  6. Because one or more major organs are weak, the entire immune system becomes weak. Actually, the microbes weaken the immune system both directly and indirectly.
  7. Since the immune system is weak it cannot kill enough cancer cells and the cancer cells grow out of control.

Theory summary: The root cause of cancer is microbial and parasitic invasion that are in the organs or colon (or bloodstream), which weakens the immune system.

Dr. Hulda Clark promoted prevention over cure

“Prevention of diseases, not cure, or treatment, should be society’s foremost goal” — one that Dr. Hulda Clark relentlessly pursued within the naturopathic medicine field.

Working under the premise that prevention is greater than cure, Dr. Clark focused on a healthy body. She believed that cleansing the liver is the best way to improve health. In her book The Prevention of All Cancers, Dr. Clark promoted “cancer has many contributors but the main actors form a single chain of events. Pull out one link and the whole cancer process is blocked. This kind of prevention is more powerful than a cure.”

Dr. Clark promoted self-health — keeping yourself healthy — and her naturopathy protocols worked to eliminate parasites (4).

What Qualifies CancerTutor.com as an Information Source?

CancerTutor, unlike other natural health forums, such as CureZone or EarthClinic, is focused on using an objective approach that takes into account the study design methodology, and funding source (i.e., they exclude any study with an explicit bias regarding conventional and integrative oncology).

CT-Grade Scientific Rating Scale:

  • Systematically and critically reviews literature for evidence-based approaches to topics in oncology with ongoing monitoring and review of new literature
  • Utilizes both external and internal peer-review of CT content
  • Applies rigorous standards to report the most relevant and valid data
    • Employs unbiased reporting on the quality of reported data and gives more weight to higher quality data and less weight to lesser quality data

Conclusion

For those seeking personalized insights on integrating holistic practices into their cancer care plan, considering professional guidance is essential. Everyone has differing preferences for managing their healthcare, and we know that the more comfortable the treatment, the more likely it will be successful. The reason is not only due to placebo effect, but also because gentle treatments increase follow-through, reduce mental and physical stress on overall life imposed by aggressive radiation treatments, and provide the patient with the ability to gauge their own body's feedback. Hopefully, future research will place greater value on the importance of patient feedback throughout the process of integrative cancer therapy, and provide for legitimate clinical trials where natural treatment protocols are tested against conventional options, and not merely as additions that improve outcomes for conventional treatments.
