High Doses of Vitamin C: The Ultimate Healing Nutrient

5 comments by Beata Havlickova

We all know vitamin C supports the immune system and helps prevent colds. But did you know that high doses of vitamin C can do much more? Research and decades of clinical experience suggest that therapeutic levels of vitamin C may aid recovery from serious health issues like autoimmune diseases, cancer, bladder infections, arthritis, high cholesterol, diabetes, chronic fatigue, heavy metal toxicity, post-surgical complications, and more.

Why Vitamin C Is So Essential

Unlike most animals, humans cannot produce vitamin C naturally. We lost this ability about 61 million years ago. To put this in perspective, a 70g rat under stress can produce up to 15 grams of vitamin C daily — highlighting just how crucial this nutrient is, especially during stressful times. In humans, vitamin C is quickly depleted during stress, particularly from the adrenal glands. Since vitamin C plays a vital role in the body’s stress response, having a reliable source can help reduce the damaging effects of stress.

A Pioneer in High-Dose Vitamin C: Dr. Fred R. Klenner

Before vitamin C therapy became popular, Dr. Fred R. Klenner was one of the first to publicly advocate for high doses of vitamin C as a powerful treatment. In 1948, he published groundbreaking work demonstrating its success in treating viral diseases — well ahead of mainstream acceptance. During the polio epidemic, he successfully cured every case of polio using vitamin C.

Dr. Lendon H. Smith, M.D., who applied Klenner’s methods with his patients, said:

“I have used Dr. Klenner’s methods on hundreds of patients. He is right. It helps almost every condition and situation, and my failures were due to inadequate amounts.”

RDA vs. Optimal Health Today?

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is 90 mg for men and 75 mg for women. But this amount only prevents deficiency diseases like scurvy. It’s not designed to support optimal health, healing, or recovery from illness. What Dr. Klenner is saying about the dose…The more serious the health issue, the higher doses of vitamin c are needed. It always should be consulted with an experienced health practitioner. Some health centers offer vitamin c intravenously, which increases the absorption.

How Vitamin C Works in Healing

Vitamin C interacts directly with toxins and viruses, oxidizing and neutralizing them. This is why supplementation often needs to continue even after symptoms improve. Additionally, vitamin C saturation in the blood plasma enhances liver detoxification. Since the liver is the body’s main detox organ—removing toxins, microplastics, heavy metals, and more—optimal vitamin C levels help maintain efficient detoxification. A sluggish liver means slower toxin clearance and a greater risk of disease

Safety

Have you ever heard that people with kidney stones should not be taking higher doses of
vitamin c? He explains that urine flow blockage and concentrated urine are the main
physiological causes. Oxalic acid only forms crystals in neutral or alkaline urine, with a pH
between 7 and 10. However, people taking 10 grams of vitamin C daily usually have urine with a pH around 6. Even diabetics taking this amount don’t show a significant increase in oxalate in their urine. Vitamin C actually acts as a great diuretic, preventing urine stagnation and concentration. The idea that vitamin C causes kidney stones is a myth. Additionally, methylene blue, taken orally at 65 mg two to three times a day, can dissolve calcium oxalate stones, according to a report in Medical World News.

Factors influencing the body's vitamin C requirements include:

●  Age
●  Lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption, drug use, and smoking
●  Quality and amount of sleep, particularly when sedatives are involved
●  Physical and emotional stressors like infections, injuries, work-related strain, emotional
distress, or surgery
●  Environment
●  Climates
●  Drugs, pesticides, carbon monoxide exposure
●  Weight

My Personal Experience with High Doses of Vitamin C

Before I share some real-world experiences from others, I want to share my personal journey with higher doses of vitamin C. About 11 months ago, I started taking 2 grams of vitamin C daily as a preventive measure, taken orally. Since then, I haven’t been sick once.
I recommend dividing the dose into two portions per day, especially if you’re new to taking
vitamin C. Taking too much at once can sometimes cause digestive discomfort due to high acidity, which is why some emulsify the ascorbic acid. From the research I did, Dr. Klenner reported only minor side effects like occasional diarrhea or bloating. You can add vitamin C powder to your smoothie or dissolve it in water since it is water-soluble.

Any excess vitamin C that your body doesn’t use will be excreted through urine. However, the optimal dose really depends on your individual health situation. This is not medical
advice — always consult your healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.

Other Real-World Experiences

Poliomyelitis
A five-year-old girl experienced paralysis in both legs, accompanied by knee and back pain. After receiving massage and injectable Vitamin C, she regained movement in both legs within four days. She continued oral Vitamin C at home (1000 mg every two hours) and was able to walk by the eleventh day. Her treatment then shifted to Vitamin B1 (10 mg four times daily), and she fully recovered by the nineteenth day of treatment.

Hepatitis
A 27-year-old man presented with a 103-degree Fahrenheit fever, nausea, and jaundice for
three days. He received an initial intravenous infusion of 60 grams of sodium ascorbate in 600 cc of normal saline, along with 5 grams of oral Vitamin C every four hours. Subsequent
treatments included another 15 grams of intravenous Vitamin C three hours after the first,
followed by another 60 grams intravenously (this time in 5% glucose in water) twelve hours after the initial dose, and a final 15 grams intravenously after two more hours.

Hard Measles
A ten-month-old baby diagnosed with measles, exhibiting high fever, watery nose, dry cough, red eyes, and Koplik spots, was treated with 1000 mg of Vitamin C every four hours. Within twelve hours, the baby's temperature dropped to 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit, the cough stopped, and eye redness cleared. When Vitamin C was paused for eight hours, the fever returned, rising to 103.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Resuming Vitamin C injections brought the fever back down to 99 degrees Fahrenheit within a few hours, and no rash developed. In another severe case, 60 grams of sodium ascorbate in 1000 cc of 5% dextrose in water was administered rapidly intravenously, leading to the patient's discharge within twelve hours.

Summary and Conclusion

Unfortunately, you will not very often hear about the healing power of high doses of Vitamin C. Dr. Klenner published extensively on this topic, conducting numerous valuable research studies. Despite all the hard work Dr. Klenner dedicated to this field, and the sense that his contributions were never truly appreciated enough, he remained remarkably enthusiastic about the potential of Vitamin C. I particularly resonate with the powerful quote of his, where he recommended to use:

"Large doses of vitamin C in all pathological conditions, while the physician ponders the diagnosis.”

Hello everyone, I am the author of this article. I made a typo—I wrote “70 kg rat” instead of “70 g rat,” which is obviously incorrect. thank you for understanding and for your nice comments!

  • Molly Mackinnonn

The first “fact”, is based on a 70kg rat?!???
    One hundred fifty+ pounds?!?
    You just lost me, sadly…
I expected better – you belittle Dr. Clark’s brilliance with this. Very sad ‘organization’.

C and B-complex was prescribed as a supplemental with antibiotics by the Dr when I was growing up in Czechoslovakia.
All water soluble a fat soluble vitamins should be taken as such. Never tricked as the opposite such aa fat soluble vit C or water soluble D

    Great article!

Linus Pauling, always a lover of vitamin C learned about mega dosing from Klenner and Abram Hoffer! Read Niacin, The Real Story with tons of other stories about orthomolecular medicine that pHARMa doesn’t want coming out. Meanwhile, the Ortho guys cured many cases of MS, some MR, depression, alcoholism and many other sicknesses.
