How Heat Treatment Affected Wormwood in Our Latest Test: A Revealing Find Using HPTLC

At our quality assurance lab, we are constantly testing products to ensure that consumers are getting the highest quality supplements possible. Sometimes, something unexpected pops-up during a routine check on a popular herbal supplement ingredient. For example, a recent large batch of Wormwood, that we had received from a supplier, appeared to have been heat-treated prior to shipment, rendering it largely ineffective although still the correct species. 

We identified this issue using High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) technology, which showed that most of the active ingredients had been stripped away during the heat treatment.

Let's look at how this process of rigorous testing—including spectrophotometric analysis—is an integral part of the quality assurance process for every supplement made by Dr. Clark Store. 

The Problem: Heat Treatment and Active Ingredients

Wormwood, scientifically known as Artemisia absinthium, is renowned for its active compounds, particularly artemisinin, which has been widely studied for its potential therapeutic properties. This herb has a rich history in traditional medicine, particularly in treatments for digestive issues and other ailments.

Our supplier, in this case, heat-treated the Wormwood as part of their processing method. On paper, heat treatment might seem like an effective way to preserve or enhance certain properties, such as shelf stability or reducing microbial contamination. However, our tests revealed a surprising outcome that showed how heat can alter a plant’s chemical composition.

What Did the HPTLC Technology Reveal?

HPTLC is a powerful tool used to separate and analyze components within a sample. For supplements and herbs, it can identify active ingredients, validate their concentration, and check for purity. The results of our HPTLC analysis were eye-opening.

We ran a sample of the heat-treated Wormwood through the HPTLC system, and the chromatogram clearly showed a dramatic reduction in the key active ingredients—artemisinin and related compounds. In fact, nearly all of the active components were either reduced or eliminated due to the heat treatment process.

As you can see in the image, the peaks representing the active compounds are either missing or significantly diminished, indicating that the heat treatment destroyed the very elements that make Wormwood effective as a supplement.

For consumers who rely on herbal supplements, ensuring that the active ingredients are present in meaningful quantities is crucial. In this case, the heat-treated Wormwood would have likely been ineffective or vastly less potent than expected, potentially rendering it useless as a therapeutic supplement.

This discovery highlights the importance of proper processing techniques and the role of testing technologies like HPTLC in ensuring product quality. It also underscores the necessity for transparency and thorough testing in the supplement industry, as certain practices—like heat treatment—can unintentionally destroy active ingredients that consumers expect to be in the final product.

We work with trusted suppliers who adhere to strict processing standards, and we test samples regularly to keep the integrity of every product intact.

The Role of Spectrophotometric Analysis

One of the essential tools in our lab for verifying supplement quality is spectrophotometry. This method allows us to measure the concentration of active ingredients based on their absorption of light at specific wavelengths. For example, when testing a supplement that contains vitamins, we can use spectrophotometric analysis to determine the exact levels of the vitamin present in the product. By comparing the sample’s absorbance to a standard curve, we can confirm that the product contains the correct amount of the active ingredient.

In the case of Wormwood, spectrophotometric analysis is especially useful in conjunction with HPTLC. While HPTLC gives us a visual representation of the compound's presence and concentration, spectrophotometry provides quantitative data on its concentration, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
