Iodine: The Unsung Hero of Health

Quick Takeaways:

  • Iodine supports thyroid health, metabolism, and energy.
  • It acts as a natural antimicrobial and detoxifier.
  • Not all iodine supplements are the same—your body needs the right match.

Why We Still Need Iodine

Most people know iodine as the mineral that supports the thyroid. But in my work as a holistic health coach and OligoScan practitioner, I’ve found that iodine is so much more than a thyroid supplement.

It’s a master mineral for:

  • Metabolic regulation
  • Hormonal balance
  • Cellular detox
  • Brain development
  • Immune defense

Iodine is stored in more than just your thyroid—it concentrates in the breasts, ovaries, prostate, salivary glands, and even the brain. So when levels are low, the whole system can feel off: fatigue, cold hands and feet, brain fog, hormonal irregularities, and even a lack of emotional drive.

The Iodine Crisis No One Talks About

In 1971, iodine was quietly removed from our food supply—most notably from commercial baked goods—and was replaced with bromide, a halogen that blocks and displaces iodine in the body.

Since then, we’ve seen a steady rise in breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers—in both men and women, and increasingly at younger ages. While many factors contribute to cancer risk, this shift in our food chemistry deserves attention.

We’re no longer getting iodine from our food—and worse, bromide is actively leaching iodine out of our tissues, leading to thyroid disorders and many other conditions and deficiencies.

That’s why it’s so essential to reintroduce iodine into the body daily, using clean, pure sources like Dr. Clark Store’s iodine products.

Choosing the Right Iodine: It’s Personal

The Dr. Clark Store offers three different iodine options, and in my practice, I’ve seen that each body resonates with a different form:

  •  Lugol’s Iodine 2%: A powerful blend of iodine and potassium iodide. Excellent for thyroid and full-body support.
  •  Nascent Iodine: A gentler, bioavailable form—often better tolerated by those with autoimmune concerns or high toxicity.
  •  Iodoral Tablets: Great for consistency and simplicity in your routine.

Important: If one type of iodine doesn’t work for you—don’t give up! This is what I do professionally: I energetically match the right form of iodine to your body's current needs. If you're unsure where to start, feel free to contact me here.

Clearing Up the Confusion

Many people—doctors included—have hesitated to recommend iodine supplementation out of concern that it might “shut down the thyroid.” But this confusion often traces back to the use of RAI (radioactive iodine) in hospitals, which was introduced in the 1940s to ablate overactive thyroid tissue or treat thyroid cancer.

It’s important to understand that nutritional iodine—like Lugol’s Iodine, Nascent Iodine, or Iodoral—is a completely different substance. It doesn’t destroy tissue; it nourishes it.

Unfortunately, decades of misunderstanding around RAI have led to widespread myths, even among healthcare professionals, that iodine is “dangerous” in large amounts. In reality, it’s one of the most essential nutrients for healthy thyroid function and hormone balance—when used in the right form, at the right time, and with proper cofactors like selenium and magnesium.

If you’ve been told to avoid iodine, it may be time to revisit the conversation—with a fresh understanding of the difference between radioactive therapy and a vital trace mineral your body depends on daily.

How Iodine Helps Detox

Iodine isn’t just a helper—it’s a defender.

It actively works to:

  • Detox fluoride, bromide, chlorine, and mercury
  • Reduce radiation and EMF sensitivity
  • Support breast, prostate, and brain health
  • Promote sharper thinking and hormonal clarity

In fact, iodine deficiency has been linked to lower IQ in children and developmental delays. That’s why I often refer to it as a "non-negotiable mineral" for growing minds and aging bodies alike.

A Word of Caution

Iodine is powerful—so it must be respected. If detox pathways are sluggish or your body has stored mercury, iodine can stir things up quickly.

I recommend starting with:

  • A high-quality form like Lugol’s Iodine
  • Detox Essentials Kit to support drainage
  • Cofactors like selenium, vitamin C, magnesium, and sea salt

Still not feeling right? You may simply need to switch iodine types or adjust the dose. Again—your body knows, and I can help you listen to it.

@John – Thank you so much for sharing your experience—and you’re definitely not alone in that reaction.

Yes, I’ve seen similar responses in some of my clients, especially when the body isn’t ready to handle a sudden influx of iodine or when there are underlying halogen toxicities (like bromide, fluoride, or chlorine) that get stirred up too quickly. Irritability, emotional swings, and even depression-like symptoms can be signs that detox pathways are overwhelmed.

In cases like yours, I often recommend a slower, more supportive approach. Nascent iodine (like Dr. Clark’s formula) tends to be much gentler and better tolerated. I also always suggest pairing iodine with cofactors—especially selenium and a pinch of Celtic sea salt in water—to help escort the displaced halogens out of the body. This can make a world of difference.

If you’d like to explore what your body is asking for specifically, I offer saliva testing and personalized support plans. You can learn more and reach out at www.restorevitality.net — I’m here to serve and support your body’s healing.

@Ruthann Thank you for sharing that, and what a great question!
Yes, I’m familiar with Atomidine—especially as referenced in the Edgar Cayce readings—and I appreciate its historical use as a form of detoxified iodine. While I personally use different forms of iodine in my current protocols, I respect how well Atomidine has worked for many, both topically and internally.
In my practice, I focus on bioavailable iodine forms that support thyroid health and detoxification, especially in clients who show signs of halogen toxicity (like bromide, fluoride, and chlorine interference). I’ve found that pairing iodine with co-factors like selenium and Celtic sea salt (as Cayce also advocated in some of his readings) can dramatically improve uptake and reduce any potential side effects.
It’s always fascinating to see how timeless many of these approaches are—thank you again for contributing to the conversation!

@Robert – You’re absolutely right—iodine’s effectiveness is deeply tied to the presence of other trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, and manganese. These nutrients work together, helping iodine absorb and function properly in both humans and animals.
For those who don’t want to rely on diet alone (even seaweed), Dr. Clark’s iodine formulas offer a clean, potent option:
    • Lugol’s Iodine (2%): a powerful blend of elemental iodine + potassium iodide—great for full-body support, especially thyroid health drclarkstore.com+2drclarkstore.com+2drclarkstore.com+2
    • Nascent Iodine: gentle, bioavailable, and often better tolerated—ideal for those with sensitivities or heavy toxic burden drclarkstore.com
These products ensure people can get consistent, effective iodine dosing—while still supporting mineral balance.
Given your seaweed expertise, your recommendation would be a powerful complement. For anyone ready to go deeper, I also offer personalized saliva testing and trace mineral analysis through a contact form on my site (www.restorevitality.net) to help identify mineral gaps and optimal iodine use.
Thanks again for sharing your wealth of experience, and for highlighting companies like SeaShot making whole-food iodine accessible!

@Carol – Thank you so much for sharing your experience and routine—you’re clearly doing a lot of things right, especially post-RAI. The persistent coldness and Raynaud’s symptoms you’re describing are things I see often, even when labs look “normal.”

According to Dr. Hulda Clark, cold hands and feet can be signs that the body’s energy systems are disrupted and not clearing toxins effectively. She recommended:

Lugol’s or Nascent Iodine – to support thyroid warmth and function

A Kidney Cleanse – to improve circulation by clearing filtration blockages

Zapper use – to address underlying parasites

Avoiding halogens (like chlorine, bromide, fluoride) – which block iodine

Arginine + Ornithine – to reduce ammonia and improve blood flow

If you’d like to explore this deeper, I offer saliva testing to uncover your body’s specific blockages and healing priorities. You can start that process at www.restorevitality.net using the Contact Submission form.

Thanks again for your thoughtful post, Carol—sending you warmth and support from here!

Hello Erin, I, unfortunately, had Radioactive Iodine when I was around 19. I am now 61. I am currently taking NP Thyroid, 60 mg daily. I also take an iodine spray (10sprays in the back of the throat in the a.m. 6 days out of the week). It is by a company called Activation Products. I also use their topical magnesium spray called Ease (40 sprays on skin after showering). I also take selenium and other supportive nutrients. I eat mostly plant based with some wild caught fish and wild caught Elk and grass fed, grass finished beef. No wheat, sugar, gluten. dairy, soy, corn if I can help it. I get a complete blood work up not just TSH. Even though all markers are normal, I am always cold. I mean to the point of being debilitating. My hands and feet are extremely cold with Raynaud’s in my hands even in the summer if it’s really damp or I’m getting something out of the freezer or handling wet produce at the grocery store. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Carol from Michigan
